Overview of clinical academic training

The Cambridge Cancer Centre offers an Integrated Academic Training Programme, as defined by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). This means that training is tailored to equip translational scientists with the skills and experience they need to progress in their combined research and clinical careers. There are currently 33 clinical fellows participating in the programme.

The programme offers training in clinical practice, Phase I, II and III clinical trials, translational research and basic scientific research.

There are three potential modes of training:

• Academic Clinical Fellowship Programme – 3 years divided into 6 blocks of clinical training.

• Academic Clinical Lectureship Programme– 4 years, 2 years of research and 2 years of clinical practice.

• Clinical Research Fellowship Scheme – 3 years conducting full-time research for a PhD degree

The Cambridge Cancer Centre Clinical Research Fellowship scheme provides funding for clinicians to undertake a full-time 3 year PhD degree with the University of Cambridge. For information about the scheme please see Clinical Research Fellowships 2024.

• Surgical oncology
• Pathology
• Radiology
