Third cohort of health professionals completes research internship

A pharmacist, a critical care nurse and a podiatrist at Addenbrooke’s have completed a research internship hosted by our Nursing and Allied Health Professionals (NAHP) Programme.

Dan Bell (lead pharmacist), Anna Rantionova (critical care nurse) and Paul Jordan (diabetic podiatrist) and are the third group to take part in the Clinical Research Network (CRN) Eastern Research Internship Programme. The initiative aims to help healthcare professionals develop research skills and experience.

Over the last three months the interns have spent one day a week on clinical research placements and attending lectures.

The programme has offered them a comprehensive exploration of various aspects of clinical research, covering diverse specialties such as critical care, neurosurgery, emergency medicine, and cancer.

Dan Bell said: "I have come to the end of my NIHR internship with a much greater understanding of the practicalities of research, and feeling inspired to undertake research of my own. I have used the internship to start an academic research project of my own, and to develop practical research ideas for my team of pharmacists."

The interns have also gained insights into the workings of the CRN Eastern group, the Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH) Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals team, and the expansive cancer research landscape at Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

Each intern was paired with an experienced mentor to guide them through the internship. This personalised support system aims to enhance the learning experience and provide valuable networking opportunities within the research community.

Dan added: "The networks formed with my mentor and the wider research team will be invaluable in helping me achieve these goals."

The interns also took part in a lab tour at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute to see the cutting-edge research facilities and find out about current research projects.

Exposure to both clinical and laboratory research has given them a well-rounded understanding of the research process.

Having completed the internship, Anna, Paul and Dan have now become research champions within their respective fields. The NAHP Programme is committed to continuing to support them as they progress in their research careers.

Applications for the next CRN Eastern Research Internship Programme will open in late September or October 2024, with the internship beginning in January 2025. A webinar on 20 September will provide further details – please email nahp@cancer.cam.ac.uk if you would like to attend the webinar.

The programme is also seeking experienced research professionals interested in taking on mentorship roles for future cohorts. If you are interested in this role, please email nahp@cancer.cam.ac.uk.

Our support of this internship programme exemplifies the commitment of the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Centre to increase opportunities for healthcare professionals to engage in research. By fostering research skills among nurses, midwives, and allied health professionals, the programme contributes to building a robust research culture within the NHS, ultimately benefiting patient care through evidence-based practice and innovation.
