World-leading urology in Cambridge

Cambridge Urology has been voted as one of the best urology teams in the world at annual conference of specialists.

The Urology team working at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute was selected as one of the best in the world by the American Urology Association Conference in Orlando in May, which is the largest annual meeting of urology specialists.

The team was chosen for their ‘unique achievements’ in prostate cancer research, superiority in prostate cancer diagnosis with MR imaging and leading quality of patient-centred prostate and bladder cancer treatments. A short film presenting a profile of the team was shown during the conference.

Addenbrooke’s was one of the first hospitals in the UK to invest in the Da Vinci robot which carries out robotic surgery on patients suffering from prostate cancer. Almost all prostate cancer operations in Cambridge are carried out using state of the art robotic surgery compared with a national average of just 20%.

Lead Urologist and Robotic Surgeon Nimish Shah, said ‘It’s a great honour to be selected amongst the world’s leading centres at a meeting like this. Cambridge Urology has grown over the past decade to become one of the largest departments in the country with leading experts for all areas of urology forming part of the team.’

The team’s unique achievements also extend to kidney and testicular cancer care as well as management of urinary stones and non-cancerous bladder and prostate problems.
Many specialists also train and study while working as practising clinicians at Cambridge Urology.

Cambridge Urology have formed an integrated Prostate Cancer team and in the future they will focus research, clinical care and business on providing the world’s best available care for their patients.
