Inaugural Integrated Cancer Medicine Symposium

In early July the Integrated Cancer Medicine (ICM) Institute hosted a hugely successful symposium focussed on the use of AI in cancer care and research.

In the fabulous surroundings of Downing College the Institute brought together over 100 delegates in person with a further 400 online over the two days in the first ICM Symposium of its kind.

The delegates comprised global leaders in their areas both international and from the University of Cambridge as well as established and early-career researchers, students, clinicians, surgeons, industry partners, patients and the public.

The patient’s voice ran through the conference as a golden thread as they participated as both speakers and panellists and for the first time at a such an event the Ovarian Cancer Patient group presented a flash talk and a poster highlighting the ways in which they participate in and help to shape research.

Discussions were centred around AI in precision oncology, including early prediction/detection, integration of multiple data streams including pathology, imaging, clinical information etc, to aid clinical decision making and collaboration between industry, academia and the NHS.

Invited speakers included Faisal Mahmood, Harvard Medical School; Jakob Kather, Technical University of Dresden; Anniina Färkkilä, University of Helsinki; Javier Alvarez-Valle, Microsoft Research, Cambridge; Bissan Al-Lazikani, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and Eric Aboagye, Imperial College, London.

The delegates spent a collaborative two days networking with one another and discussing the opportunities and challenges working with AI in a healthcare setting can bring.
There were highly interactive sessions and opportunities for conversations and connections to be made particularly whilst they were participating in engagement demonstrations such as the IMAXT, surgical robot training tools and a presentation from the CCRH team over coffee one afternoon.

The speaker dinner held in Sidney Sussex College further facilitated more discussion and we are excited to watch the resulting collaborations develop in the future.

One Research Associate said “The ICM symposium was truly exceptional, I particularly appreciated the involvement of patients. This aspect was unique, stimulating, and very emotional. It provided a grounding perspective for the scientists and was incredibly motivating”

The event put the CRUK Cambridge Centre Integrated Cancer Medicine Institute on the map as a global leader in AI and healthcare.
