Research description

Elizabeth Murchison studies the genetics and evolution of clonally transmissible cancers. Transmissible cancers are unusual cancers that have survived beyond the bodies of their original hosts via the transmission of living cancer cells. Naturally occurring transmissible cancers are known only in dogs, Tasmanian devils and bivalves. Elizabeth Murchison leads the Transmissible Cancer Group, which particularly studies the genetics and evolution of transmissible cancers in dogs and Tasmanian devils.
